Washoe County officials aren’t following their own reopening plans as cases of COVID-19 surge. Just one county in Nevada isn’t at substantial risk of COVID-19. It’s Eureka County. Meantime, Storey County has now had high transmission of the virus for the second week in a row, triggering stricter masking requirements. Now, there and in most counties in Nevada, you’ll have to wear a mask in indoor public spaces.
Tahoe residents are keeping a close eye on the Caldor Fire-as they hope flames doesn’t reach the lake and nearby communities. The Caldor Fire has swelled to nearly 123,000 and containment is just at 11%. The fire destroyed the Grizzly Flats neighborhood in the Sierra foothills and is heading towards Echo Summit on Highway 50.
Meantime, smoke from the Caldor and Dixie Fires will continue to permeate the air in northern Nevada this week. The greatest impacts will be in Reno, Carson City, Minden, Truckee, and Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe Community College’s campus will remain closed to through Friday. It’s all due to smoke levels from the Caldor Fire. Fall classes don’t start until Monday, September 13th. College services will be held virtually at Cranium CafĂ©.
In the wake of the Tamarack Fire, which prompted evacuations in Douglas County, the county is asking residents to participate in an evacuation survey.
