Washoe Co. sheriff withdraws hefty fee request for public body camera footage

The Washoe County Sheriff has withdrawn his request to charge members of the public $200 per hour to make copies of police body camera footage. Sheriff Darin Balaam says he’s heard the concerns of community members, who say the fee aims to undermine transparency and accountability in his office. Balaam had been requesting that county commissioners approve the fee because he says it’s time-consuming for staff to redact footage. Instead, he says his office will strive to make videos available in a timely fashion.
