Nearly four dozen firefighters from Truckee Meadows, Reno, Sparks, and other departments in northern Nevada are helping battle several wildfires raging in California. They’re taking part in a variety of roles form fire line paramedic to air tactical missions. Fires in California have scorched a record 3 million in just the last few weeks.
A new DMV in South Reno is opening November 2nd. It’ll be located off Sandhill Road and Double Diamond Parkway-off the South Meadows exit. It will replace two existing DMV offices in Reno-the ones on Galletti Way and the facility on Greg Street.
New COVID-19 cases are popping up in Washoe County schools despite them being closed for a week due to wildfire smoke and unhealthy air quality. Matthews Elementary has four positive cases while Veterans Memorial STEM Academy also has a case. A central services district employee has also tested positive.
UNR’s president is sounding the alarm on off-campus gatherings, saying they’re leading to a spread of COVID-19 cases on-campus. Extreme weather could force black-outs in Incline Village Friday. NV Energy is considering a planned outage starting Friday at 7 a.m. to prevent further wildfires. The outage could last as long as 11 hours.
All Washoe County, Storey County and Douglas County students at both lake and valley schools are distance learning again today. Carson City schools are on a hybrid learning schedule today. According to the National Weather Service, the air quality is still in the “unhealthy range” due to the smoke from nearby fires.
