Wildfires have scorched a record two million acres in California this year–with far more in tap to burn as several fires rage in the state. All eight national forests in the southern part of the state as we head into fall-the most dangerous time for wildfires.
The first case of COVID-19 surfaces in Lyon County schools. It was reported at Fernley High School. Anyone who’s had close contact will be notified, and students who must quarantine will be offered remote learning opportunities. There’s also been a new confirmed case of COVID-19 at Reed High School in Washoe County.

The Carson City School District is halting transportation and bus services for at least two weeks out of an abundance of caution. The decision was made due to the number of employees who have been advised to isolate from a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the district’s transportation department.

The Slink Fire burning near Topaz Lake has scorched more than 20,000 acres so far. It was at least 30 percent contained at last check.
An unofficial gathering on the playa in the Black Rock Desert marks this year’s Burning Man–which for the first time ever was canceled due to COVID-19. Several thousand were said to have gathered in camps spread out across 200 square miles. State restrictions limit gatherings to 50 persons. The BLM monitored the event.
