The lightning-sparked North Complex fires that consist of the Bear, Sheep, and Claremont Fires near Susanville continue to rage. Scorching more than 264,000 acres so far, the fires are just 35 percent contained. The Bear Fire is the deadliest of the three–killing as many as 15 people.
The Fork Fire continues to burn southwest of Lake Tahoe in the Eldorado National Forest. The fire, sparked last week, spans more than 1,700 acres and is just 7 percent contained. All Tahoe National Forest campgrounds remain closed due to the fire. A dense smoke advisory remains in effect in northern Washoe County today.
President Donald Trump surveyed California wildfire damage Monday. While scientists largely say climate change is to blame, the president says the main cause of the fires out west is poor forest management. Washoe County sees its first case of a rare illness tied to children who are diagnosed with COVID-19. The health district says the child recovered from COVID-19, but was later hospitalized with MultiSystem Inflammatory Syndrome. The illness often occurs two to four weeks after the onset of COVID-19 in people under age 20.
