A Salvadoran immigrant accused of four murders in northern Nevada will face one trial in Reno. Wilber Martinez-Guzman is accused of killing an elderly Reno couple and two women in Gardnerville last year. He faces the death penalty though due to COVID it’s unclear when his trial will be scheduled.
A 2018 police-involved shooting is declared “justified” by the Washoe County DA. 21-year-old Nicolas Sedano was shot and killed after detectives, investigating a burglary, say he accelerated in a stolen vehicle towards a Reno Police officer, striking him. Sedano went through a chain link fence and crashed. He later died.
The death toll from the North Complex fire that continues to rage out-of-control across the state line rises to at least 10. As many as 16 people remain unaccounted for. It’s the deadliest fire in California this year.
Air quality in the Reno-Sparks area went from good to unhealthy the last 24 hours. Wildfire smoke moved into the area last night and lingers today. Carson City and Gardnerville are also seeing poor air quality.

A case of COVID-19 surfaces at Van Gorder Elementary School in Sparks. It’s unclear whether the case involves a student or a staffer, but school officials say they don’t believe anyone from school will have to quarantine. Meantime, Washoe County’s death toll from COVID-19 rises to 147. The county added 45 cases and 75 recoveries.
One man is facing an open murder charge in connection to a shooting in Smith Valley Thursday night. Lyon County Deputies say 29-year-old Mathew Strain is in custody, suspected of shooting and killing another man near the intersection of Canal Road and Nevada State Route 338.
