Washoe County School District approves annual budget

The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees has approved the annual budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. It includes an increase in funding for at-risk students, from $4 million to over $15 million. It also includes $3 million to go into school safety, including the addition of 8 new school police officers.

Peavine Creek Fire contained

A fire that broke out in Peavine Peak in Dog Valley is now 100% contained. The cause is still under investigation. Fire crews will be on scene today to ensure the fire remains contained. The fire was burning on U.S. Forest Service land.

Hiker dies from injuries

A hiker died in an avalanche in Inyo County. Authorities tell KOLO, a group of three hikers was caught in a wet slide avalanche while descending Split Mountain near Big Pine, after making the summit earlier in the day. Two of the hikers had less-serious injuries, but the third hiker died from their injuries.

Algal bloom found in Washoe Lake

A potentially harmful algal bloom has been found in Washoe Lake. The bloom was identified at the shoreline of the lake. The algae can be especially dangerous for children and pets. Visitors and their pets are discouraged from swimming in the lake water until further notice.

Law enforcement fight impaired driving

Area law enforcement are teaming up for a campaign against impaired driving. The Joining Forces enforcement goes through July 21st. It’s meant to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving.

Authorities investigate shooting

Police conducting homicide investigation

Sparks police are investigating a homicide. A man was found lying on the ground near Fisherman’s Park. Police are doing a homicide investigation based on injuries to the victim. If you have any information that could help police, call Secret Witness at 775-322-4900.

Sentence given in crash

20 years in prison is the sentence for a Sparks man for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. 33-year-old Michael O’Farrell was arrested in May of 2022 after the truck he was driving crashed into a motorcycle. The victim suffered multiple injuries in the crash.
