Tens of thousands of South Lake Tahoe residents are being permitted to return to their homes this Labor Day as evacuation orders tied to the Caldor Fire are downgraded to warnings. Cal Fire has issued a warning now for residents on the Lake Tahoe side of California 89 from the city limits to Emerald Bay and on both sides of 89 from Emerald Bay through Tahoma. Mandatory evacuations are still in place for Fallen Leaf Lake, Christmas Valley, Meyers, and the North Upper Truckee River area. In Douglas County, all of Kingsbury Grade remains under an evacuation warning. But evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted for Lower Olivers and Lake Village. The Caldor Fire remains a serious threat though. It spans more than 215,000 acres with containment at last check at 43 percent.
