Operations are winding down at the Reno-Sparks Events Center, which served as a shelter for hundreds of evacuees who fled the Caldor Fire flames. As many as 800 evacuees stayed there for a week, but many have now gone home since evacuation orders were lifted for South Lake Tahoe Sunday. The Red Cross says it’s the largest shelter their chapter has had to put together for disaster relief with 300 volunteers lending a helping hand.
The Caldor Fire is now at least 49% contained after growing a few hundred acres in the last 24 hours. Firefighters say containment lines are holding well. The fire, which started August 14, destroyed the community of Grizzly Flats.
