Risk of ‘megafire’ in Lake Tahoe Basin strong after dry winter, firefighters say

The risk of what firefighters are calling a “megafire” in the Lake Tahoe Basin is larger than ever following a dry winter. The heavily forested basin is the crown jewel of the Sierra, but with that beauty comes strong risk. Firefighters point to the 2007 Angora Fire near Fallen Leaf Lake that was sparked by an illegal campfire that scorched 3,000 acres and burned 250 homes. News 4 reports South Lake Tahoe spent $5 million to upgrade its communication systems and worked out a more coordinated response -so any agency can dispatch out no matter where the fire is burning.
