The 2020 Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook Off has been canceled due to COVID-19. Nugget General Manager Mark Sterbens called canceling the event a “difficult” decision, but says it’s best for the safety of residents and guests since hundreds of thousands typically attend. They plan to return Labor Day weekend of 2021.
One person is hurt after a shooting near Boomtown. Police say shots were fired from a car on westbound I-80 near the Mogul exit. The victim ended up at a nearby Chevron gas station with a bullet wound. So far, no arrests have been made.
A chopper crashes and burns at the Minden-Tahoe Airport. Emergency crews say the pilot and a passenger were able to walk away from the crash. The cause of the crash remains unknown.
Firefighters manage to stop a fire from spreading by Pyramid Lake. They stopped the Hardscrabble Fire’s progress at between 45 and 60 acres-near Sutcliffe– by attacking it from all sides and by sky Saturday. No one was hurt. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
