Washoe County Braces for Budget Shortfall

Washoe County is projecting an estimated $24.6 million budget shortfall for the 2020 fiscal year largely due to the coronavirus pandemic. During Tuesday Washoe County Board of Commissioners meeting, commissioners were presented with a proposed fiscal year 2021 budget totaling in $714.6 million. Officials say the county is experiencing significant financial impacts from COVID-19 due to both unplanned and increasing emergency response costs and abruptly declining revenues due to business closures. As of April 25, Nevada’s unemployment rate of 19.9% is the highest unemployment rate in the state’s history.
