NWS: Record wind speed 200mph+ hits Kirkwood Mountain

It may’ve been a record. The National Weather Service says wind speeds at Kirkwood Mountain Resort, south of Lake Tahoe hit 209 miles per hour Sunday morning. The wind was so fierce, the resort had to shut down skiing operations for the day. Truckee Police say downed power lines closed some roads in the Tahoe Donner subdivision.

Some mistook the hazy skies for smoke over the weekend, but the National Weather Service says dry winds blew in from the north and picked up dust from the Black Rock Desert and carried it all the way to Reno.
