Reno City Council votes to spend $11 million on new homeless shelter

Reno City Council votes to build a new homeless shelter. Council voted 6-1 to spend $11 million on the larger shelter on east Fourth Street. Councilwoman Jenny Brekhus was the lone hold-out, saying the city needs two shelters. The 22-thousand-square foot building will serve a centralized location; it will feature a cafeteria, security storage, laundry and medical services, a resource center, and an outdoor dog park.

Council also voted Wednesday to transition homeless responsibilities to Washoe County. They say state law says it’s the county’s responsibility with council members voicing frustration that the county has not acted, despite saying they will. They say the county needs to step in and clean up homelessness along the Truckee River.
