Renown’s CEO worried about hospital capacity as COVID-19 cases surge

Renown’s CEO says he’s really worried about the current COVID-19 trends which break records almost daily. At last check, Renown has 188 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, including 27 who are staying at an alternate care site established in a parking garage that serves as overflow. Two dozen patients are in ICU. CEO Dr. Tony Slonim says numbers right now are four times the average and hundreds more patients are expected to be admitted over the next few weeks. He adds on top of it all front line health care workers are exhausted and some are ill from COVID-19 though he wouldn’t give specific figures.

Meantime, five more people have died from COVID-19 in Washoe County, for the second day in a row, bringing the death toll to 246. The county has seen two dozen COVID deaths in just the last five days. The county added nearly 400 cases and nearly 140 recoveries.
