Washoe County School Board sets up coronavirus criteria that would dictate school closure

After an eight-hour public meeting, the Washoe County School Board talks more about its reopening plans. They’ve got 1,600 teachers on stand-by ready to fill in, in case a teacher stays home. But they still fear too many absent teachers could lead to a school closure. They also determined coronavirus criteria for a closure-that includes a seven-day average of new cases of more than 100 per 100,000 for two weeks or a seven-day positivity rate of more than 10 percent for two weeks. Schools reopen Monday against the health district’s recommendation. Superintendent Kristin McNeill says more than 15,000 students have chosen virtual instruction while 49,000 will return to the classroom.
