Drug crimes could be re-classified, leading to lower penalties

Penalties for some drug crimes could be lowered. The Nevada justice panel is working to re-classify certain drug crimes and put misdemeanor offenders into programs over prison. Supporters of the plan say taxpayers will save money over time. The ACLU says Nevada’s prison population is higher than the national average-with some drug offenders being sent out of state due to overcrowding. A vote on the issue is scheduled for later this month.
