Inmate behind racially-charged prison riot dies behind bars

An inmate at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center has died. Nathan Kimmel, 76, was pronounced dead Tuesday. KOLO-TV reports he was serving a life sentence without parole on first-degree murder charges in connection with a 1976 racially-charged riot at the state prison in Carson City that left two prisoners dead and four others hurt. Prosecutors say Kimmel helped plan the attack that led to 18 inmates being charged. An autopsy will determine his cause of death.
