Bill would protect immigrants from deportation round-ups

A new bill, filed by the state Senate’s first Latina, seeks to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation in Nevada. State Senator Yvanna Cancela’s bill would limit the Silver State’s cooperation with immigrations and customs enforcement agents as they ramp up efforts to increase deportations. If passed, state, local and campus police would not participate in any immigration round-ups without a warrant. Critics say the bill endangers Nevadans and makes it a sanctuary state. Cancela says it’s a pre-emptive measure against President Trump’s actions, which she says have inspired fear and hatred around the country.
