Home Evacuated Due To Gas Leak

A gas leak in Reno. It was about 7:30 last night that a resident was digging in his yard and accidentally hit a gas line. It happened on Nixon Avenue near the intersection with John Fremont Drive in southwest Reno. The homeowners were evacuated as a precaution, but firefighters were able to clamp off the gas leak pretty quickly. No one was hurt.

fireball in sky was Chinese rocket, not UFO

Many people thought it was a UFO But it turns out it was a Chinese rocket. The U.S. Strategic Command says the Chinese CZ7 rocket re-entered the atmosphere late Wednesday night. Pictures and video of the mysterious fireball in the sky caused a social media frenzy. Initial thoughts were that the light was tied to a meteor shower.

Active shooter training held for staff Reno-Tahoe airport

Staff at Reno-Tahoe Airport got active shooter training on Tuesday. In the past, training was limited to police officers and first responders, but airport officials say with what happened in Brussels even those working in ticketing and baggage claim need to be prepared. The drills lasted about four hours. Staff learned to tie tourniquets and other medical treatments that focused more on safety after an emergency over the initial response.

1 sex offender arrested after compliance checks in Lyon Co.

A sex offender is arrested and more than two dozen were found to be out of compliance in connection with a multi-agency collaboration. Through Operation Vigilance, Lyon County sheriff’s office deputies, Fallon Police, and U.S. Marshals knocked on doors last week in Fallon, Silver Springs, Yerington, and Fernley.

Tesla To Unveil Gigafactory

Tesla will unveil the Gigafactory. Customers will get a peek behind the curtain at Tesla at the Gigafactory Grand Opening on Friday. The media,however, got a look at the plant on Tuesday. The Gigafactory, located at the Reno-Tahoe Industrial Park, is only 14 percent complete. When it’s finished, it will be the length of about 107 football fields. Completion is expected in 2020. However, robot arms are hard at work already assembling lithium ion battery parks for the electric car company. Tesla says the factory is being built in phases to minimize production disruptions. The company expects to eventually employ as many as 10 thousand people at the Gigafactory.

Shots Fired At House Party

There were shots fired at an early morning house party in Reno. Police were called out to a house on Manzanita Court at Plumas Street about 3 am. After getting reports of gunfire. They found a man who had been shot in the leg. He was taken to Renown. Police are investigating whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.

Witnesses Rescue Driver After Crash, Fire

One person was rushed to the hospital late last night after a vehicle rolled over and burst into flames near Sparks Middle School. It happened about 10:30 pm. Police say a vehicle with a 17 year old at the wheel was speeding, and unable to stop at the intersection of Wedekind Road and Sullivan. The brakes locked and the car went into a skid. It struck the curb, then a rock wall, finally rolling over into Oppio Park where it caught fire. Witnesses to the crash got the driver out of the burning vehice. That driver was rushed to Reknown.

Push to reopen Moana Pool

The hot temperatures have prompted a group to push for more city pools. Just three pools are open right now. The Moana Pool closed down in 2007, but 2 News reports the Sierra Nevada Community Aquatics would love to reopen it. The year-round aquatic center would include two pools and a fitness center. The project would be paid for with donations, but the group says the city would need to pay for the operational costs.

Storey Co. needs volunteer firefighters

Storey County needs firefighters. Those 16 and older are urged to upply for the volunteer positions. Accepted applicants will train to fight structure and wildlands fires. They’ll also learn hazardous materials response and how to provide emergency medical response at the scene of car crashes.

Man struck in Reno dies from injuries

The 51-year-old man who was struck by a car in Reno over the weekend has died from his injuries News 4 reported. Police say the man wasn’t using a crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle that had a greenlight. Police say neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash.
