Circuit breaker failure led to massive power outage

The lights are back on for thousands of customers in Washoe County. NV Energy says a “catastrophic circuit breaker failure” sparked a power outage that sent more than 10,000 customers–both residential and commercial–in the dark last night. The outage took most of the overnight hours to repair.

Reno working to open new homeless shelter after vandalism

Reno plans to open a new overflow shelter for the homeless next week. News 4 reports vandalism inside the city’s current shelter made the building unusable-sending 110 homeless people out onto the street or to other volunteer shelters. City officials say they have a new place in mind for the shelter and are trying to fast-track lease negotiations, but the building still needs security remodeling and sanitation improvements.

Police: Siri’s Casino shooting involved employees

We now know men involved in a shooting inside Siri’s Casino all worked there. Reno Police were called to the downtown casino just before midnight. Police say inside they found one man who was shot. His condition is unknown. Police tell 2 News the shooter, a casino employee, is now in custody.

A casino shooting. One man was taken to the hospital after a shooting inside Siri’s Casino late last night. The shooting,which reportedly involved employees of the casino in downtown Reno, happened just before midnight. Police say they have the shooter in custody.

Vehicle Slams Into Power Pole;Outages Result

A Reno neighborhood suffered power outages early this morning after a vehicle slammed into an electric pole. It happened just past 3 am near the intersection of Plumb and Arlington. Police say the driver of that vehicle fell asleep at the wheel.

Suspicious Package Leads to Shopping Center Evacuation

Suspicious,but harmless. Reno police say a suspicious package reported at a local shopping center on Thursday turned out to contain no threat. Police and fire crews were called out to a shopping center on Oddie Boulevard at El Rancho Drive around half past noon. They evacuated everyone from surrounding buildings. One tv news report said the suspicious package was at the Goodwill donation center. Police say the evacuation was just a precaution, and the package contained nothing harmful.

Thieves Target Garage Door Openers

The most dangerous thing a thief can steal from your car is your garage door opener. That’s why Reno police are spreading the word that criminals are breaking into cars parked outside of homes in the Virginia Lake area, and they’re doing it for the garage door openers. Police say a lot of don’t lock the garage door leading into their home. That makes the garage door opener essentially a key into your house. Police recommend that you lock your garage opener up in your glove box, console or trunk.

Sandoval Not Interested in High Court Nomination

The governor says no thanks. Yesterday we told you about a CNN report that said Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval was being vetted for a possible nomination to the Supreme Court. Today, we learn that the governor is not interested in filling the seat left vacant by the death of Antonin Scalia. Sandoval says he has contacted the White House to make it clear that he doesn’t want to be considered for a possible nomination at this time. He did not say why.

Crooks Team Up To Steal SUV

A pair of robbers teamed up to steal a woman’s SUV in Sparks yesterday afternoon. Police say the woman was at the intersection of Greg Street and Spice Islands Drive when another vehicle struck hers from behind. She got out to check the damage to her vehicle. While she was out of the car, a man with a gun got into the drivers’ seat and demanded her money. He drove off in her SUV, and the car that hit her also drove away.

Suspect Arrested In Sun Valley Car Burglaries

A teenager has been arrested in connection with a number of vehicle burglaries in Sun Valley. Washoe County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 18 year old Ryan Brogan, along with a juvenile female suspect on Wednesday. Deputies say they were able to connect Brogan with four vehicle burglaries and believe he may be involved with more.
