The state Senate passes a bill that would ban misleading Spanish ads. The crackdown on advertising comes after many say it’s hurting immigrants’ chances of gaining legal status while leading to jumbled paperwork and fraud. The bill adds the term “licenciado” to the list of banned words. It means licensed, but can be confused with a Spanish description for lawyer. Current law prevents notary public from using the term notario in ads unless they’re also licensed lawyers because the work means lawyer in some Latin American countries. The measure now heads to the Assembly for a vote.
