Nevada college student arrested for rifle, ammo in vehicle

A student at a Las Vegas-area community college is facing a weapon charge after police found a rifle and about 2,000 bullets in his vehicle parked on campus.
The man told police following his 6 p.m. arrest Wednesday at the College of Southern Nevada that he forgot he had the weapon in his vehicle. The student identified as 27-year-old Shayn David Striegel of Las Vegas.

Reno Man in Washoe Co. Jail After Kidnapping Mother

A Reno man who was arrested in California as a suspect in the kidnapping of his 80-year-old mother from a nursing home has been returned to Nevada to face criminal charges. Police apprehended 52-year-old Roger Hillygus Aug. 16 after a standoff with a SWAT team in suburban Los Angeles. He was extradited back to Reno Wednesday. Hillygus was being held Thursday in the Washoe County Jail on $50,000 bail.

Reno Aces to Close Out Season on the Road

The Sacramento River Cats clinched the Pacific Coast League’s Pacific Northern Division with a 10-2 win over the Reno Aces Thursday night. The Aces will wrap up the season with a four-game series at Salt Lake beginning tonight at 5:35pm.

Tsxi vs. Motorcycle Accident

The Sparks Police Department says they responded to a crash at Pyramid Way and C Street on Thursday night. They said a taxi cab driver failed to yield to a motorcyclist, who had the right of way, and crashed. Two pedestrians in the area were hit with debris from the crash. The taxi cab driver, motorcyclist and the two pedestrians were all taken to the hospital as a precaution, but only minor injuries were reported.

Nevada Casinos had a Good July

July was a good month for casinos in Nevada, with house winnings topping $1 billion for the fourth time this year, according to state regulators on Wednesday. The $1.02 billion that casinos statewide won in July nearly matched the $1.04 billion a month earlier and represented a 2.9% increase compared with July 2018, this according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board .

Tesla to Sell its Own Insurance

Tesla owners can now buy insurance policies from the electric car company in what may be an essential step toward it selling driverless vehicles. The company says it’s now selling policies in California and will go nationwide at an undisclosed date.
