Parents with questions about the state’s new school choice program can get answers at an informational meeting tomorrow night. It’s being hosted by Bishop Manogue Catholic High School in the gym. 2 News reports several state experts will be on-hand. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday and is free and open to the public. The controversial voucher program has one more legal hurdle before the state’s highest court in July before it become it goes into action.

Three candidates are vying for a seat on Reno City Council. Incumbent councilwoman Jenny Brekhus, a Democrat, will face lobbyist and Republican Victor Salcido and artist Richard VanGogh, who’s a Democrat. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports VanGogh moved to Ward 1 just to challenge Brekhus. Voters in Ward 1 head to the primary June 14.
Some law enforcement officers roar around town on big Harley Davidson motorcycles. Not the officers on the Truckee Police Department. They’ve just purchased an electric motorcycle. They intend to use it instead of bicycles when they need to get around quicker. They also say it will help them catch crooks in the rugged back country around Lake Tahoe. The motorcycles have lights and sirens and will be used daily on Truckee’s streets, trails and off-road areas when the weather is appropriate.
When police questioned an 11 year old by in connection with an arson brush fire in Truckee, he admitted setting not only that blaze, but another one two days before. The brush fire was set on Sunday night in the area of he Henness Flats apartments off Henness Road. Truckee Police along with Forest Service Arson Investigators looked into the cause of the fire, and eventually their investigation led them to that 11 year old. The boy was booked into Nevada County Carl F. Bryant Juvenile Hall on charges of Arson of a Forest Land and Possession of Arson related items.
Police are still searching for a second suspect in connection with a burglary in Carson City. Carson Now reports they arrested 22-year-old Matthew Marizza in Lyon County. Police say Marizza and Cody Rogers-Shaw stole jewelry, an iPad, and an antique handgun from a home on Lindsay Drive earlier this month. Officers say Marizza pawned some of the jewelry and that’s how he got caught. He was charged with burglary and other offenses. Officers warn Rogers-Shaw-who’s still out there–could be armed and dangerous.
A man is arrested on charges of DUI. Sheriff’s deputies in Douglas County say 41-year-old Elliot Harris was driving just north of Minden late Saturday night when his vehicle rolled over. KOLO-TV reports deputies say Harris suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital before being jailed. Deputies say he had an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.
We now have the name of a man killed in a crash in Spanish Springs. Troopers say 56-year-old Bret Harris of Reno was driving the wrong way on Pyramid Highway late Friday night when he careened head-on into a Ford Escape. The NHP says Harris wasn’t wearing his seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Nineteen-year-old Andrea Perrine of Sparks who was behind the wheel of the SUV was taken by ambulance to the hospital. She’s expected to survive.
Millions of drivers will be hitting the road for home this afternoon after the holiday weekend. Drivers are paying the lowest gas prices for the Memorial Day holiday since 2005, in spite of recent increases. Nevada gas prices remain among the top five most expensive in the nation, after California, Hawaii, Washington and Alaska. Triple-A says more than 38 million Americans are traveling for the holiday. 89 percent of those travelers are driving.
The early voting period for the 2016 primary election started on Saturday. There are 21 early voting locations in Washoe County, and they are open 7 days a week. Early voting closes on June 10th. Primary election day is June 14th.
A motorcyclist was killed in a crash in Reno last night. It was about 6 pm when it happened, according to police. The motorcyclist was headed north on Clear Acre Lane when he was struck by a car turning off Crystal Lane. Police say they don’t believe alcohol was involved in the fatal crash.
