Gambling Down

The NGC Board officials reported Tuesday that the state’s casinos brought in a little more than $876 million in November. That was up less than one-tenth of a percent from November 2013. Las Vegas Strip gambling revenues were down and Reno casino revenue was down less than 1 percent, While South Lake Tahoe gambling revenues plunged 30 percent.
The state collected $47 million in taxes based on the November winnings, which is down 5 percent from the same time last year.

Pedestrian hit by car

A pedestrian was hurt after being hit by a car. 2 news says it happened on Sutro Street near 4th. The driver is cooperating with the investigation. The pedestrian had minor injuries and was taken to hospital. Police say alcohol and/or drugs do not seem to be involved in what happened.

Snow Globe Music Festival Underway

The Snow Globe Music Festival gets underway at South Lake Tahoe today, and organizers expect attendance to be up this year. The festival goes through 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day. 2 news says a Snow Globe producer expects the event to draw about 14,000 people a day. Last year the event attracted 10,000 people a day. Organizers have been able to make more room for the event by taking some items out of the main field, and so they can have more concertgoers.

Sun Valley man arrested for attempted armed robbery

Deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office arrested an 18-year-old Sun Valley man Thursday night for the attempted armed robbery of a Sun Valley restaurant employee. The robbery apparently happened at the Panda House restaurant at about 8 p.m. Thursday. Police heard that an employee had been threatened by a knife-wielding suspect while the worker was taking out the trash. The victim said the suspect demanded money from him. The suspect left on foot after the victim insisted, multiple times, that he had no money. The suspect was taken into custody in the area of Sun Valley Boulevard and Second Avenue. That suspect is 18 year old David Calderon.

Carjacking under investigation

Sparks police are looking for a carjacking suspect. It happened last night, at Heritage Bank on Los Altos Parkway. Police say a man robbed a woman at a bank drive-through, then took off in her car. The vehicle that was stolen is a black 2011 Audi four-door sedan, with Nevada license plates 635-LEW.

State unemployment rate drops below 7%

Nevada’s unemployment rate has dropped below seven percent for the first time in six years.

Reno-Sparks reports the lowest rate of the major metro areas at 6.4 percent.

Carson City’s rate sits at 7.1 percent.

Cause of county jail inmate’s death determined

The medical examiner’s office has new information on a woman who died at the Washoe County Jail.

The office says 31-year-old Kerry Roop died from heart problems having to do with high blood pressure.

Roop surrended on a contempt of court violation in August. Deputies say she died in her cell two days later.

2 suspects eyed in armed robbery at Sparks bar, reward offered

Sparks Police continue looking for two armed robbers.

They believe the suspects held up JJ’s Sports and Spirits on Sunday night.

Secret Witness has offered $1,500 for information leading to their arrests.

Police say one of the men had a rifle. Employees and a few patrons ended up held at gunpoint, but no one reports any injuries.

Video shows at least one of the suspects at the bar with a small sports book.

Sparks police investigate robbery

Sparks police are looking for two men accused of robbing a bar last night. It happened at JJ’s Sports and Spirits on Holman Way. Two suspects held a few patrons and workers at gunpoint before taking money and leaving on foot.

Sign up for toy distribution

Registration for the Salvation Army Christmas toy distribution is ongoing. Today through Friday, you can sign up between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., at the Salvation Army Christmas Center at 589 East Prater Way. You have to bring items like ID for head of household, proof of Washoe County residency, a birth certificate or other proof of age for all children to be registered, and proof of low-income eligibility.
